I only stayed one night, but I really enjoyed it. The staff were very welcoming and helpful with directions. Breakfast was excellent and in a nice sunny room. The best part was the location, I was able to walk everywhere I needed to go.

Stayed for a single night while on a business trip. Staff were friendly and very accommodating, room was clean and well appointed. I would certainly choose to stay here again given an opportunity.

Easy instructions and smooth check in after hours. Room was large and comfortable. Slight drawback being able to hear the people above walking. Wasn’t a huge issue. Would definitely stay there again

We had a very nice stay at Douglas Guest House. I really enjoy staying in a bed and breakfast, and as someone who especially appreciates Victorian homes, the house itself was a lovely highlight of the visit. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the neighborhood was charming and in a great location. It was easy to get around the city with nearby train and bus access, and we enjoyed being able to walk to Mount Pleasant for shops, cafés, and restaurants. Breakfast was good each morning, and after staying for five nights, it felt like a comfortable and good-value home base for exploring Vancouver. I would definitely recommend Douglas Guest House to anyone visiting the city, and I would be happy to stay here (or try out one of their other homes) again on a future trip.

OUR HOUSE

General

Douglas Guest House is part of the few Victorian Bed and Breakfast (B&B) in Vancouver city. The classic and historical accommodations have a Victorian charm, coziness, and beauty. The Victorian houses are well located and conveniently near the downtown area.

Architecture

The form of the houses is considered asymmetrical, narrow, with a 2-floor building, typically set low to the ground. They have a big bay on one side that ascends to the roof, which is a gabled one. A half-porch supports a small deck space for the upstairs. Most of the Victorian houses in Vancouver have been demolished over the years.

Background

The Victorian period lasted from 1837 to 1901, named for the reign of Britain’s Queen Victoria. However, only styles from the last decades of her reign are classified as Victorian. The industrialization and the expansion of the railways allowed the development of lighter framing methods, which changed the character of the housing design and construction. These changes influenced Vancouver city, where timber multiplied and local sawmills produced mass-intricate details. The result was the elaboration of shapes and details on Victorian buildings.
